The Best Air-Fryer Toaster Ovens

Air-fryer toaster ovens can air-fry and toast—and do a whole lot more besides. Which is best?

Editor&aposs Note:Update, September 2024

We tested three additional air-fryer toaster ovens, including the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer, which we highly recommend. Our winner remains the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro.

What You Need to Know

Our favorite air-fryer toaster oven—the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro—excelled in all our cooking tests: air frying, roasting, baking, broiling, and toasting foods perfectly. It’s also one of the most user-friendly machines we’ve tested, with intuitive controls, an easy-to-read digital display, and a host of other features that make it a pleasure to operate.

We also loved the Ninja Foodi 10-in-1 XL Pro Air Fry Oven, which performs just as well as our favorite and is generally less expensive. Oddly, while it’s got a slightly bigger footprint than our favorite, its actual capacity is slightly smaller.

Finally, our Best Buy is the Instant Oven 18L Air Fryer Toaster Oven. It does a great job of air frying, roasting, and broiling, though it’s a little underpowered as a toaster. Its digital interface is not as easy to navigate as those of our top options, but considering that this model is less than half the price of our winner, we think that’s a fine tradeoff

Want a simpler, less expensive option for air frying? Read our review of air fryers or watch our video comparing the two best types of air fryer options

What can’t the best air-fryer toaster ovens do? Serving as both air fryers and toaster ovens, these hybrid machines are more versatile than either of those appliances, allowing you to air-fry, toast, bake, roast, and broil different types of food. They’re also bigger than both air fryers and toaster ovens, providing plenty of room to air-fry mozzarella sticks for a crowd, roast a whole chicken, or even bake a 9-inch round cake. Because they’re bigger, you have to preheat them before many applications, unlike with conventional air fryers. But they still preheat more quickly than a standard oven, saving you time and helping you get a faster start on your meal.

Like air fryers, air-fryer toaster ovens don’t actually fry your food. Instead, they’re essentially powerful countertop convection ovens, using fans to circulate hot air so that food cooks swiftly and evenly, its exterior crisping and browning while the interior remains tender and moist. (A mesh basket holds the food in the air-fryer toaster oven so that the air can circulate above and below.) And in contrast to smaller convection toaster ovens, air-fryer toaster ovens have fans that operate at higher speeds, allowing them to crisp and cook the surfaces of food more quickly when air frying, baking, or roasting.

We've tested dozens of air-fryer toaster ovens over the years in our quest to find the best.

Not all air-fryer toaster ovens are good at all tasks. In fact, only a few excel at everything from air frying to roasting. We’ve tested dozens of models over the years, and we’ve found that a few simple features make all the difference.

As the name implies, a good air-fryer toaster oven should be able to make toast in a range of light to dark, as seen on the bottom row. Many models, including the one that made the toast on the top row, couldn't do it all.

What to Look For

  • Good Air Frying: The best models were able to evenly crisp pounds of fries and up to four cutlets’ worth of chicken parmesan to a perfect, golden brown.
  • Good Toasting: A good air-fryer toaster oven should be able to replace your toaster oven. We preferred models that could make toast in a range from light to dark and performed consistently regardless of whether we were toasting one piece of bread or six.
  • Good Roasting and Baking: We liked models that could maintain more moderate heats for roasting and baking. About half the models we tested were capable of producing beautiful roast chickens with crisp, evenly golden skin and moist meat.
  • Good Broiling: Our favorite models made Simple Broiled Asparagus that was tender but not overcooked and were even able to give them a good char. Rack position was key: Models with racks that sat closer to the top heating element—within 2.6 inches or less—produced the most evenly browned asparagus.
We liked air-fryer toaster ovens with simple, easy-to-use controls.
  • Clearly Marked, Easy-to-Use Digital Controls: We liked air-fryer toaster ovens with controls that were clearly labeled, making it easy to select the setting, time, or temperature we wanted. While we didn’t dislike models with analog dials, we preferred those with digital controls and displays, as these were generally more precise, letting us choose the exact temperature or time we wanted instead of forcing us to choose them in 50-degree or 10-minute increments as was the case with some models.
  • Large Cooking Space: The bigger the cooking space, the more food we could fit in it. This applies not only to the volume of the interior, though the best air-fryer toaster ovens had more than enough room to roast a whole chicken or even, in the case of our winner, a small turkey. With air frying, interior volume is less important, since you can only position food in a single layer to allow hot air to circulate properly. Here, the surface area of the air-fryer basket included with each model was key. Our favorite machine came with an especially large air-fryer basket that had nearly 175 square inches of room for food—enough to fit 3 pounds of chicken wings in a single layer.
  • Large Viewing Windows: The best air-fryer toaster ovens had large viewing windows, allowing us to monitor our food’s progress as it cooked.
  • Auto-Pause Timers: When air frying, you’ll often need to flip, rotate, or shake the food to get it to cook evenly. We preferred machines that paused the cooking time automatically when we opened the door to do this; cooking resumed automatically after we shut the door again, so we didn’t have to reset the time or account for lost seconds.
We liked models that clearly indicated where to put the rack for each cooking function.

Nice to Have

  • Clearly Marked Rack Locations: We liked models that indicated exactly where you should put your oven rack, sheet pan, or air-fryer basket for different settings (roast, bake, toast, air-fry), as this made it easier to cook foods successfully, without guessing the correct position.

What to Avoid

  • Poor Performance: Very few of the air-fryer toaster ovens that we’ve tested excelled at all tasks. Many of the air-fryer toaster ovens we tested just weren’t very good at toasting, either failing to get toast to a medium brown even after two rounds or toasting unevenly, rendering some pieces of toast dark while others in the same batch looked untouched. Others couldn’t air-fry evenly, possibly because their fan speeds were too low, leaving some french fries crisp while others were either charred or limp and undercooked. Some produced pale, flabby-skinned roast chicken or forced us to extend our cooking time by more than 20 minutes to ensure that the chickens were cooked through. And others simply couldn’t char food while broiling, either because their top rack was too low or because the machine didn’t generate enough heat at that setting.
  • Limited Controls: The markings on some of the models’ time knobs were divided into 10-minute increments, while the temperature knobs of other models were divided into 50-degree increments. These controls offered less precision, preventing us from customizing our cooking time and temperature to our liking.
  • Low Top-Rack Position: Models that had a top rack position 3 or more inches away from the top element struggled to char food while broiling.

The Tests

FAQs

It depends on your needs, space constraints, and budget. Air fryers are great for smaller spaces; they’re comparatively compact and inexpensive. Because they’re smaller, they accommodate less food than air-fryer toaster ovens but also take less time to heat—most don’t even require preheating. And they’re typically easy to clean, with smaller drawers that often have nonstick coatings. If you’re not sure about whether air frying is for you, these smaller, less expensive models are also a great way to dip a toe into the water.

Air-fryer toaster ovens have a much larger footprint, so they are best for home cooks with plenty of counter space. Most cost considerably more than the average air fryer too. They can be a bit trickier to clean—the metal baskets you use for air frying collect grease and batter more readily than the air fryers’ nonstick drawers—and most perform best when preheated. But air-fryer toaster ovens can hold more food than most air fryers—up to twice as much—and can perform more functions, arguably giving you greater bang for your buck.

Want to learn more? Check out our video comparing the two types of air fryers

There’s some overlap between air-fryer toaster ovens and conventional toaster ovens in terms of size, price, and functionality, especially since many toaster ovens now come with fans for convection. But some differences exist. Toaster ovens usually run a bit smaller than air-fryer toaster ovens, though many are still big enough to roast a chicken or heat up a frozen pizza. Because they’re smaller, they heat up a touch faster, too, getting toast to a perfect golden brown more quickly. And generally speaking, toaster ovens are often less expensive than air-fryer toaster ovens.

But while you can bake, roast, and sometimes even broil in many toaster ovens, most aren’t really designed for air frying. Even when toaster ovens have fans for convection, those fans often operate at a lower speed than those in air-fryer toaster ovens, so they can’t get food quite as brown or crisp as quickly. Many toaster ovens also lack the mesh baskets that allow hot air to circulate around small foods during air frying, though you can sometimes buy these accessories separately.

If you mainly plan to use your appliance for toasting, baking, broiling, and roasting, and want to save a little money or space, a toaster oven will suit you fine. But if you want to add air frying to that list of functions–and have the space and extra money to do so–a larger air fryer toaster oven is the way to go.

Air-fryer toaster ovens can be easy to clean, or they can be a pain, depending on what you cook in them. Most come with removable crumb trays that allow you to easily dispose of any bits of food that fall to the bottom of the oven. If you cook oily or fatty things—say, a roast chicken—your job will be a bit harder as grease can splatter all over the interior. Wait until the machine has cooled to a safe temperature before sponging the walls, door, and heating elements with hot, soapy water. While some models allow you to wash their accessories—sheet pan, oven rack, and air-fryer basket—in the dishwasher, most recommend hand washing.

Over time, grease and bits of food can accumulate on the interior of your air-fryer toaster oven. If this has happened to your model, check out our guide to getting the gunk off of your countertop oven.

Because air-fryer toaster ovens are considerably larger than air fryers, they need to be preheated before use for best results. Most come with built-in preheat cycles, while others allow you to select preheating times manually, providing specific preheating times for different functions in their manuals. Use the manufacturers’ recommendations.

Our top pick had intuitive controls and consistently made the best food in the bunch. We liked its clearly labeled knobs and digital interface that displayed the time, temperature, and cooking setting. It made excellent toast (it has adjustable settings that you can customize depending on your slice of bread); produced tender, browned broiled asparagus; yielded roasted chicken that was golden all over; and made air-fryer french fries and chicken Parmesan on par with recipes made in our favorite traditional air fryer. Because it's such a large enclosed space, and the air-fryer basket is made from uncoated metal, the oven can be a bit of a pain to clean, especially after roasting chicken or doing anything with melted cheese. This model can also accommodate more food than our favorite air fryer, which is helpful if you frequently cook for more than two people.

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer

This air-fryer toaster oven performs just as well as our top choice, its larger sibling, and is just as easy to use, with simple, clearly marked controls. It’s one of the few air-fryer toaster ovens that can actually do everything it promises to do (and to perfection): air frying, toasting, roasting, and broiling foods beautifully and evenly. It’s about 30 percent smaller than our top choice, so while it takes up a bit less room, it doesn’t save you a ton of counter space. (On the plus side, its air-fryer basket is still capacious enough to hold four chicken cutlets with room to spare.) And at just $50 less than our favorite, it doesn’t save you much money either—though this model is available in a much wider range of colors than our top choice, if looks are a priority! Like our top choice, it can be a bit of a pain to clean after roasting a chicken or air frying food that’s prone to spattering, but this is a minor quibble indeed. It’s otherwise a fantastic, well-made product.

Ninja Foodi 10-in-1 XL Pro Air Fry Oven

This model has a similar capacity to our winner, though its external footprint is about 10 percent larger. It offers an array of functions, including air frying, broiling, and toasting. Its digital controls are intuitive and straightforward, with a display that lights up to clearly show the time elapsed. Its air-fried food was as good as the food made in our winning air fryer, and it also excelled at toasting bread to different doneness levels, broiling asparagus, and roasting chicken. Like all the air-fryer toaster ovens we tested, it was a bit hard to clean. Though it’s a tad larger than our winner, we still recommend this model for those who have room in their kitchens and are looking for a great multipurpose appliance that will maximize their cooking capabilities.

Instant Omni Pro 18L Air Fryer Toaster Oven

This air-fryer toaster oven did a great job of air frying, producing crisp, evenly golden french fries and chicken Parmesan. It put a good char on asparagus while broiling and made a gorgeous roast chicken too. Rack positions for each cooking mode were indicated on the door, helping us cook food properly. The cooking countdown conveniently paused when we opened the door to flip food. We especially appreciated its temperature probe attachment, which automatically cooked the chicken to our preferred temperature and then prompted the machine to shut off. Its large touch-screen interface was easy to navigate and select settings from; we liked that we could choose from two different fan speeds for convection settings. Our main complaint? Like many of the machines we’ve tested, it doesn’t make great toast, routinely requiring us to use the darkest setting just to get lightly colored toast, and it wasn’t particularly consistent when we used it to toast multiple pieces. A few minor quibbles: This model’s viewing window is on the small side, with more of the oven’s facade used for the touch-screen display than we’d prefer. And its rotisserie was somewhat underpowered, struggling to rotate 3-pound chickens.

Cosori 26-Quart Ceramic Air Fryer Oven

We were intrigued by this air-fryer toaster oven, which has a ceramic bottom that you can use as a hot plate—just turn it on, put a small saucepan or baking dish on it, and you can boil or simmer foods. And it did a good job with most tasks, broiling asparagus well, roasting a chicken until it was golden brown, and air frying fries and chicken cutlets until they were nicely crisp. Like many air fryers we’ve tested, however, it really struggled to make evenly browned toast in a reasonable amount of time—it took nearly 14 minutes to get a piece of sandwich bread to get any color whatsoever. And while its controls were generally straightforward and clear, we didn’t love that they were located along the door handle and that the labels were very small. It also wasn’t obvious how to cancel a setting, though we eventually got the hang of things. We did like that there was a button that let us add time to any cook—always a useful feature.

Calphalon 11-in-1 Toaster Oven Air Fryer Combo

With a simple, intuitive console, this air-fryer toaster oven was easy to use. We liked that it alerted us when the oven had preheated and didn’t automatically start the cooking cycle until we pressed start. And it made surprisingly good, evenly browned toast—a task that many air-fryer toaster ovens struggle to complete. It sometimes seemed a little underpowered with other tasks. We had to turn up the heat past the recommended temperature to get frozen fries and chicken cutlets to brown and crisp while air frying, and roast chicken turned out a little pale and wan, though all these foods were eventually deemed acceptable. The one task it really couldn’t perform? Broiling We couldn’t get asparagus to brown at all, even after 20 minutes at high heat. We also wish that the air-fryer basket was a touch bigger, though it still fits three chicken cutlets.

Our Place Wonder Oven

We loved the look of this pretty, diminutive air-fryer toaster oven and appreciated the different colorways it came in. And it did a decent job of air frying, roasting chicken, and toasting, though browning was slightly less even than with higher-ranked models. The main problem? It’s a pain to use. To turn it on, you set a temperature (where applicable) and twist a dial that sets the time. Unfortunately, the dial is hard to turn, so it’s very hard to set exact cooking times; it also makes a ticking sound continuously during use, which some folks found irritating. And if you want to turn the oven off early, you have to wrench the dial to the left, something that we found uncomfortable and awkward. There are no prescribed browning settings for toast (again, you have to use the time dial to activate the oven and watch the toast like a hawk so that you can remove the slices when they’re ready). And because the oven is quite small, it can fit only about three slices of toast at a time. The oven didn’t do a particularly good job of broiling asparagus, turning them limp and overcooked before they browned. The machine’s steam function didn’t improve performance noticeably with toasting or reheating either. If you value aesthetics above functionality and/or want a smaller air-fryer toaster oven, this machine’s not a terrible choice. But for its relatively high price, better options are available. Emeril Lagasse Power Air Fryer 360

While this machine was easy to use and made decent air-fried french fries, it struggled with traditional toaster-oven functions and more complicated air-fryer tasks. Chicken Parmesan required an extra 13 minutes of air frying (pretty much doubling the recipe’s stated cooking time of 13 to 17 minutes), roast chicken needed an extra 10 minutes, and toast turned out too blond even on the darkest setting. The air-fryer basket was also hard to clean, trapping cheese and breading. We did like that this oven had a digital screen (its controls closely resembled the Breville’s) and found its clear display helpful when setting the cooking setting, temperature, and time.

Black + Decker Extra Wide Crisp ‘N Bake Air Fry Toaster Oven

This oven produced excellent toast and air-fryer chicken Parmesan, but that was it. The asparagus spears looked only lightly roasted (instead of broiled), the chicken cooked slowly and unevenly, and the air-fried french fries were only somewhat crispy. The oven’s timer knob was sparsely marked (10, 20, 30, 40), leaving us to estimate any times in between. We also found it odd that we couldn’t program the temperature for the machine’s air-fryer setting: It can only air-fry at approximately 400 degrees. It was also more difficult to clean than most of the other ovens. When we pulled the crumb tray out, most of the crumbs got stuck in the small space between the door and the bottom of the oven.
Model Number: TO3265XSSDSettings: Toast, air fryer, bake, broil, keep warm Oven dimensions: 21.3 x 10.6 x 11.5 in Air-fryer basket size: 14.6 x 11 in Price at Time of Testing: $64.34

NUWAVE Bravo XL 1800-Watt Smart Air Fryer Convection Oven with Integrated Digital Temperature Probe

This machine functioned well as a traditional toaster oven—making evenly browned toast, well-broiled asparagus, and roast chicken (that was just a touch overdone)—but it could not air-fry whatsoever. Both the frozen and fresh air-fried french fries turned out limp and undercooked, with burnt edges on just some of the floppy potatoes. While we appreciated its digital interface, we found it annoying that once the cooking process started, you couldn’t add time or increase the temperature without turning the oven off and back on again.

Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven

This model struggled with just about every task we gave it. Toast was entirely too blond on even the darkest setting, broiled asparagus was light and limp, and the air-fried french fries were limp with surprisingly burnt edges. Temperature tests showed it missed target temperatures by a whopping 85 degrees, but its air-fryer rack was close enough to the top element that a few pieces still burned. When we tried a second copy of this oven, it ran too hot, burning toast on the medium and dark settings and air-fried french fries. We also thought this model was the most challenging to clean—when we made roast chicken, grease pooled at the bottom of the door and dripped all over the counter when we opened it.

Ninja Foodi Digital Air Fry Oven

This toaster oven had a quirky design that ultimately affected its performance. At about half the height of our favorite models, its limited interior space could not accommodate a whole 4-pound chicken. And while it made medium toast well, it made only medium toast, whether it was on the lightest or darkest setting. It did produce lightly browned broiled asparagus and crispy fries. We also appreciated that it took a minuscule amount of time to preheat before air-frying, but the oven ran a bit hot and some french fries at the edges of the basket burned. Like other models, it was sometimes tough to clean. While we liked this model’s digital controls and screen, we disliked the position of its door handle, which was located at the left of the door rather than in the center. This is a space-saving measure that allows you to store the oven on its side against your kitchen’s backsplash when not in use, but we found that the handle wasn’t as functional or easy to grasp as the handles of other models, and we burned our hands a few times as we adjusted to its placement.

Oster Black Countertop Toaster Oven with Air Fryer

While this machine made excellent toast, air-fried french fries, and chicken Parmesan, it could not broil asparagus—which was not browned at all even after 20 minutes. Its top rack was positioned 5 inches away from the heating element, which made successful broiling impossible. We also had to roast the chicken for 20 minutes longer than the time specified in the recipe. Though the oven was easy to clean, it took a bit more elbow grease to remove the melted cheese from the air-fryer basket. The labeling of the knobs was less than precise: The cooking temperatures were listed in 50-degree increments and the cooking times were listed in 5-minute increments.

Farberware Air Fryer Toaster Oven

This model did a good job with toast, broiled asparagus, and air-fried french fries and chicken Parmesan, but it produced a less attractive roast chicken, which was cooked through but pale all over. It was a bit hard to clean as well, since the air-fryer basket wasn’t nonstick and trapped bits of hardened cheese. When toasting, the oven’s control knobs got very hot; we didn’t experience this with any other model’s cooking functions.

Instant Omni Plus Multi-Use Toaster Oven

While this oven cooked food decently, it had some odd quirks that were tough to overlook. It mistakenly flashed warnings that food was burning when we were air-frying, roasting, and broiling. The oven was also noticeably loud and made an annoying whirring sound. Despite these flaws, it did produce good light and medium toast (the dark toast was more medium than dark), lightly broiled asparagus, crispy air-fried french fries, and a nicely browned roast chicken. We also liked that the oven’s timer paused when we opened the door and that its big, bright control panel was easy to read. However, the oven ran a bit hot, so we had to remove air-fried foods from the oven before the ends of their stated recipe times to keep them from burning. Also, its air-fryer basket wasn’t nonstick, making it tougher to clean.
